Meet the principals: About Jeanne: My passion for recording life stories began when I was just 15 years old. While we were living in Sicily, my grandparents visited us, and for some reason I can't explain, I felt compelled to record my grandfather's voice on my brand new tape recorder. Tragically, he had a fatal heart attack not long after he returned to the United States. The audio tape serves as the only recording of his voice. It is a cherished family heirloom. Many people aren't so lucky, and wait too late to capture a loved one's voice or preserve their memories. Don't make the same mistake! It's said that every family has a story keeper. As the years passed, I took on that role. While living with my grandmother after my grandfather died, I loved to hear her tales about the people in the old family photos. Over cups of tea, I tape recorded some of those stories. Though we were more that 50 years apart in age, we weren't so different in terms of what motivated and inspired us. A few years later, I was fortunate to record my mother's voice and capture the stories of some cherished family heirlooms. Not long after that, I preserved my father's tales of his life as a submarine officer in World War II. My role as a story keeper was sealed. In 2001, I learned of the Association of Personal Historians (APH), an international organization of men and women who help others preserve their life stories. Within five years, I was president. Now, eight years after founding the company, we are thrilled to bring our passion for preserving the stories to people and organizations everywhere! Isn’t it time you told Your Story? About Andy: I have always enjoyed hearing the stories of my family: stories about submarines in World War II, growing up during the Great Depression, overcoming polio to become a beloved family physician and living in the shadows of a volcano in Italy, just to name a few. But it was not until I witnessed my mother and founder of Tell Studios, Jeanne Archer, delivering a final project to one of her clients that I truly witnessed the impact and power of writing these stories down for future generations. For me, it was a surprisingly moving experience to see her client placing both of her hands upon the final version of her book. You could see how fulfilling and rewarding it was for her to know that not only her stories, but the stories of her husband, parents, and grandparents who had since passed on, would be preserved for generations to come. The meaning of personal histories was further demonstrated to me in an even more personal manner upon the completion of my grandfather’s book about his experiences in World War II. I had heard many of the stories on separate occasions but it was not until I read the book that I knew how they all tied together and the significance of how my grandfather’s service helped the broader cause. It also helped me better understand his values and who he is today. I consider it a priceless heirloom and I am grateful that my son will have the opportunity to truly know his great-grandfather. As happy as I am to have my grandfather’s book, I am equally saddened by the fact that we never wrote down the stories of my dad’s father. Luckily some of his stories live on through my grandmother and his children but it is not the same as having them in his voice. It was these events that drew me to Tell Studios and the work of a personal biographer.
